Visual analytics provides a means for gaining insight into the 21st century's most complex challenges. In healthcare, the needs that require the most aid fall into the realm of geomedicine. Prominent examples include: containing the spread of a deadly virus or disease epidemic, treating or preventing cryptic health issues that arise from poor living conditions. These types of medical issues that can be traced back to their geographic origin are preventative and actionable. Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) is commonly used to expose relationships and generate hypotheses about the causes of observed patterns, particularly when the etiology of a phenomenon is unknown. More rigorous statistical analyses are then used to supplement EDA and confirm positive findings. This thesis examines the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD), in which the differential contributions of environmental and genetic factors remain incompletely clarified even 100 years after the first described case. Because the sensitive nature of the brain leaves it vulnerable to a wide array of influences, the challenge in determining the differential contributions of these factors lies in tracking all relevant aspects of a person's life starting from birth and into late-life (i.e. intellectual attainment and maintenance, environmental exposures, nutrition). I describe the analytical path of investigation into environmental and genetic influences on cognitive performance and illustrate the role of geography in the disease process. Using recent technological advances in scientific visualization and data analytics, I evaluated whether certain components of ambient air pollution, influenced by genetics and the aging process, can affect the rate of cognitive decline in a longitudinal multicenter AD cohort. The evidence herein supports the role of ozone, modified by genetics, in potentiating cognitive decline. The results underscore the importance of understanding and harnessing the synergistic effects of environment and genetics in molding our health outcomes.
