This study was designed to measure the impact of self-regulation strategy training on physical fitness performance and physical activity self-regulatory strategy use. Three intact high school physical education classes, were randomly assigned to two treatment groups and one control group. The study compared the physical fitness performance and self-regulatory strategy use of students who participated in different levels of self-regulation strategy training (i.e., three-phases, two-phases, or no phases). The only differences between the groups was the amount of self-regulation strategy training that each received.

The instruments used to measure physical fitness outcomes are nationally recognized standardized tests to measure components of physical fitness. The instrument used to measure self-regulatory strategy use was a researcher adapted scale. A quasi-experimental pre-test, posttest control group research design was used for this study.

Results indicated that the level of strategy training inconsistently influenced aspects of physical fitness performance, as there was no apparent effect on cardiorespiratory endurance or muscular strength, but some significant effects on muscular endurance. Students' physical activity strategy use was significantly impacted by the level of training that they received. Those students who participated in the treatment groups reported significantly higher physical activity strategy use pretest to posttest than those students in the Control Group. In addition, all groups demonstrated an increase in fitness performance pretest to posttest, regardless of treatment.
