This study investigated the effects of visually enhanced figure skating coaching pedagogy during skill acquisition by comparing traditional, primarily auditory methods of instruction, with a hybrid method featuring an intentional and enhanced visual component from a sample of 24 elite, female skaters. The research was framed by a primary research question, to what extent does an instructional method enhanced by the inclusion of visual coaching methodologies, enable a skater to master a complex skill such as the double Axel more efficiently than the traditional instructional method that employs primarily auditory feedback?

The degree of effectiveness of the enhanced, visual coaching methodology was measured using Dartfish, a motion analysis software employed by the US Olympic Committee, to measure quantitative progress indicators of the double Axel: total airtime (height), time to rotational position, total rotation, number of falls and number of pops (when a skater freezes and stops rotating midair). Results indicated significant differences for four of the five variables when post-test scores of the experimental group and control group were compared, but no skater was able to achieve total rotation of a double Axel by the conclusion of the study. To date, no systematic investigation has examined the presence of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners in the population of figure skaters nor studied the effects of individualized instruction during skating skill acquisition and there is a necessity in the field for additional research.
