The geometric and mechanical properties of pharmaceutical materials are crucial to their structural, functional and therapeutic effectiveness. The implementation of automated and convenient quality monitoring techniques is an attempt to balance control of quality against the level of testing; within acceptable levels of probability and costs. The capability of rapid/extensive inspections with minimal time and manufacturing interruption make non-contact quality monitoring systems a desirable approach to optimize this balance. The independent measurement of tableting properties both in-die and in-line during the pharmaceutical solid dosage form manufacturing process has the benefits of increased accuracy and timeliness of detection to an in-line/in-die tablet or process defect, and thus an arrival to a solution can occur much faster than with in-line force/displacement or sampling based quality control techniques alone. One of the main advantages of specifically ultrasonic in-die/in-line monitoring technology is the ability to manifest itself in a variety of configurations, techniques, instrumentation set-ups, and experimental/manufacturing approaches. Making ultrasonic in-die testing not only robust due to the inherent independence from the mechanics of the press and tablet handling equipment, but also readily adaptable to various industry needs as demonstrated by the specific cases of wireless sensors for remote monitoring, in-die monitoring of batch to batch mass and material properties of incoming excipient materials, and dry-coated (tab-in-tab) tablet core eccentricity determination via ultrasonic techniques.
