Children 1--17 years with laboratory-confirmed influenza were recruited in a multi-center setting over two consecutive influenza seasons. Influenza was more severe among underweight (n=9), stunted (n=4), and wasted (n=4) children compared to normal counterparts (P < 0.05 in all unadjusted comparisons). Fruits/vegetables was positively associated with the maximum CSIRTM Comprehensive Severity Index (CSI) (adjusted beta = 0.11, SE = 0.04), hospitalization (adjusted OR = 1.7, 95% CI: 1.2--2.4), and complications (adjusted OR = 1.7, 95% CI: 1.1--2.1). In a second study, the association between biochemical vitamin D status and RTIs was explored in a systematic review and meta-analysis. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D status < 50 nmol/L was associated with an increased odds of RTIs (OR = 2.63, 95% CI: 1.45--4.76). However, there was potential publication bias and considerable heterogeneity (I2 = 92%, p < 0.0001). Subgroup analyses revealed that the effects were significant in children and in case-control studies.
