Recent discussions concerning literary anti-Semitism have failed in different ways to come to terms fully with this complex subject. Owing to varied use by writers on the topic of confusing terminologies and flawed, arbitrary approaches to specific texts, a total rethinking of literary anti-Semitism is necessary at this time. A cogent, working definition of literary anti-Semitism proceeds from literature itself, that is, from texts, but also takes into account how different readerships have perceived the anti-Semitic aspects of texts in various ways over the course of time. Basic techniques of literary analysis, such as onomastic analysis, source criticism, consideration of narrative structures and character differentiation, and linguistic analysis are central to understanding literary anti-Semitism. Brief consideration of aspects of the history of literary anti-Semitism and of particular examples from the pre-modern era provides background for understanding more modern examples, which are no longer tied to a Christian-theological polemical position.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist and Gustav Freytag's Soll und Haben, two extremely popular nineteenth-century novels, represent examples of literary anti-Semitism from different national literatures. But, perhaps more important is the fact that the literary anti-Semitism of these two novels, conceived and written within twenty years of each other, is so radically dissimilar. In addition to literary analysis, investigation of the different social and historical contexts to which these works respond and their different intended readerships helps account for the disparity. Dickens' late revisions of Oliver Twist for "The Charles Dickens Edition" (1867-1868) raise a question concerning the extent to which the original text's literary anti-Semitism is effectively mitigated. Identification of probable sources for Freytag's Soll und Haben, writings of Friedrich Freiherr von Holzschuher and K.B.A. Sessa's Unser Verkehr, sheds light on the novel's literary anti-Semitism. In addition, the complex reception history of Soll und Haben, especially, links the issue of literary anti-Semitism to the topical, lively discussion of realism in mid-century.

Pedagogical guidelines aim to facilitate student engagement with literary anti-Semitism whenever possible. Various practical considerations, such as the basic choice of an appropriate edition of a given text, complement more theoretical questions, such as one concerning an obligation to teach about literary anti-Semitism in the case of a text where that aspect is extremely minor. A critical viewpoint and pedagogical approach which attempt to deal as thoroughly as possible with a text in all of its complexity are preferred. Including study of literary anti-Semitism in educational programs is a desirable choice, which affords students the opportunity to grasp the complex nature of texts, the aesthetic, historical, social, and axiological concerns which are intrinsic to the study of literature.
