The main research question this study poses is what affects students' perceptions of the quality of campus life and their collegiate experience at a 4-year university? Subquestions focus on academic support, campus aesthetics, student interactions, and if and how students' perceived quality of campus life affects academic performance. The bulk of previous research has tended to be of a quantitative nature, which failed to capture students' opinions in their own words, while much of the qualitative research may now be stale due to changing technology, a new generation of students and the passing of time. This is a case study and data was collected via one-on-one interviews and focus groups. Individual interviews were stopped when saturation point was reached and no new information was forthcoming. Data were coded and three different types of analysis utilized: interpretational, structural, and reflective. Students discussed a number of topics and issues they felt had an effect on their campus experience, including campus spaces, aesthetics, and community, mentoring and advising, relationships, sports and athletics, crime and poverty, cocurricular activities, Greeks (fraternities and sororities), internship and job searches, academics, residential life, emotional issues, sleep deprivation and weather. This study concludes that grade point average (GPA) does not go down causing students to become unhappy, instead, it is the reverse, when students become unhappy, GPA goes down. Most of the issues brought up by participants in this study relate to academics, which are at the forefront of the school under study. It is determined that choice is the biggest factor in how much students enjoy themselves and what type of experience they have. Choice determines how much fun they have, how well they do in academics, how much time they have to make friends, and how much sleep they get. Most participants in this study complained about the quality of their experience and wished they could have had more fun. But all chose not to and focused on academics instead, and felt it a very worthwhile price to pay.
