How environmental turbulence and leadership behavior selection act independently and interactively in achieving overall company success are very complex subjects. Company executives need to read the external environmental signals as part of the firm strategy formulation process, while selecting leadership behaviors to operationally execute their strategic choice. Correct leadership behavior selection, under certain contextual conditions, is essential for orienting worker behaviors so that they support organizational goals and achieve financial success. This study examined nine corporations via a multidiscipline approach (taking elements from strategic management, psychology, organizational dynamics, leadership, and organizational behavior) to understand the interaction of environmental turbulence and leadership behavior choice on internal (behavioral) and external (financial) performance measures. A two factor leadership hierarchical regression analysis model (using transactional and transformational leadership) failed to confirm predicted moderation effects of environmental turbulence and leadership behavior choice on all measures studied. Path analysis, with the application of Sobel statistics, did confirm the predicted order variables follow in the employee engagement-satisfaction-commitment-organizational citizenship behavior pathway.
