Research focusing on those that are adopted is important, given that there are approximately 1.5 million adopted children in the United States (U.S. Census, 2010). Although there have been numerous studies on adoption, there is scant literature on how adoptees' sense of self and sense of belonging are impacted by bearing and raising a biological child. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the female adoptee's experience of bearing and raising a biological child surrounding her sense of self and sense of belonging. Additionally, this study considered how meaningful relationships in the adoptee's life might influence her experience of bearing and raising a biological child. Utilizing Moustakas' (1994) transcendental phenomenology as the central qualitative methodology for this study, I was able to analyze the data from a unique and bias-reduced perspective. Six essential themes emerged: (1) feeling different from one's family; (2) loss of a connection with mom; (3) the importance of a sense of belonging; (4) first biological connection; (5) thoughts of birth mother; and (6) child's influence on sense of self and sense of belonging. The clinical implications included a further understanding of the impact that adoption has for the adoptee, specifically addressing their sense of self and sense of belonging. Motherhood can be a time when adoptees may reflect on their adoption and their birth mother as well as having positive effects on the adoptees sense of connection. Another important implication when working with adoptees is to recognize that the mother-daughter relationship can be challenging and that building a sense of connection is important.
