Thesis (Ph.D.)--Universite de Montreal (Canada), 2003.
This thesis accounts for the present state of discourses on translation, which have come to change over the past 30 years. This paper follows after the mapping projects carried out in Translation Studies by Robert Larose, in his book Theories contemporaines de la traduction, and Edwin Gentzler, in Contemporary Translation Theories.

Translation Studies, much like other disciplines such as Anthropology and Literary Theory, has come to realize the distinctiveness that characterizes the many ways in which she develops her knowledge, that definitely differ from traditional theories. It is argued that a transformation has occurred in the social sciences in general and in Translation Studies more specifically, which has altered how knowledge is produced and organized. Translation has her own way of knowing in what we have called a postmodern epistemology of translation.

Based on Michel Foucault's archeological method, Translation Studies can be thought of as a site from which discursive artifacts pertaining to translation are extracted. It appears that these collected objects are interrelated, forming coherent networks, or larger and more general discursive formations, called theories. The theories found in the postmodern epistemology of translation are Descriptive Translation Studies; Cultural Studies; sociological perspectives; deconstruction; women, postcolonial, philosophical, psychoanalytical and hermeneutical perspectives; poetics of translation; ethical perspectives and chaos theory. Translation Studies cannot be considered monolithic and closed, but rather heterogeneous and open, as it is interdisciplinary. Translational knowledge has proven to be plural and transversal and, as such, it belongs to a postmodern epistemology. Furthermore, ideas on translation follow eight major vectors of knowledge, which are decompartmentalization, decentering, fuzziness, reconstruction, metissage, micrologization, doubt and incompletion. Those are some of the many legitimate ways in which knowledge is produced in a postmodern epistemology.

This research acknowledges the ambivalence underlying Translation Studies, which is both autonomous, that is to say freed from the linguistic rule, and dependent upon other disciplines from which she borrows certain conceptual tools. As well, this paper shows the heuristic power of translation, as it used by other social sciences to expand their theoretical horizons, namely Sociology, Philosophy, Women and Postcolonial Studies, Psychoanalysis and Hermeneutics. As such, translation can act as an epistemological model for other social sciences, leading them to discover innovative ways of producing knowledge focused on plurality, opening and incompletion.
