Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Dominguez Hills, 2015.
This thesis explores the significance of the war memoir as a literary genre and historical resource by examining selected memoirs written by veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2003 to 2011. Although war memoirs have not always received the same respect as other non-fiction accounts of war, the objective of this study is to demonstrate that soldiers' memoirs can be an auxiliary lens through which the history of the Iraq War may be studied. The Iraq War has been referred to as the first "Internet war," giving rise to a number of real-time accounts written in weblogs. This phenomenon gave rise to the publication of many books that provided candid first-hand accounts of the Iraq War. Research into the events leading up to the second Iraq War and remarks taken from confidential interviews with veterans who served from 2003-2011 serve to corroborate the personal accounts found in the memoirs.
