Though we are living in the twenty-first century, we face the same essential issues such as where we come from, and why we are who we are. This creative dissertation attempts to provide a critical and creative understanding of those issues with a focus on the relationship between human beings and their place or displacement in the twentieth century. It includes a book length epic poem and a critical essay on the poetics of displacement. The critical essay defines place, displacement, and linguistic displacement, and demonstrates how displacement changes our spatial perspective, our human condition, and our methods of communication. Inspired by both scholarly works and poetry on the topic by scholars and poets of diverse backgrounds including George Steiner, Edward Said, Yi-Fu Tuan, and Frederick Turner, I argue that an inquiry into poetry of displacement may reveal different spatial perspectives and new artistic sensibilities growing out of displacement. With the insights gained from studying those scholars and poets, I propose a poetics of displacement that addresses a series of issues including coping with traumatic experience, dual perspective, and a bi/multi-lingual and multi-genre approach. Through conceptual examinations and textual analysis, the critical essay shows why and how different cultures and literatures come together and create means of communication for the possibly hostile and chaotic world caused by displacement. The critical essay also examines examples of writings and poetry by poets from different parts of the world such as Eliot, Kinnell, Cha, Gervitz, Brodsky and others. The creative part is a book-length poem entitled An Epic of Displacement, which recounts the displacement of nearly 150 historical figures from all walks of life, including an account of my personal journey. It gives voices to many individuals who are displaced for a cause but neglected completely by history and literature. The epic poem poetically explores how displacement changes individuals' perspectives and ways of writing. The final goal of the dissertation is to engage in an intellectual and creative dialogue on our living situation in the twentieth century's world of displacement, and to promote literary and poetic ways of coping with displacement for future humanistic studies.
