This study successfully recruited an online sample of convenience composed of volunteers who well represented those in years 1-4 in medical school from regions across the United States. The sample of medical students (N=246) was as diverse as the current matriculated medical school population in the nation, including over half (56.1%, n=138) identifying as White, 11.8% (n=29) African American, 7.7% (n=19) Latino, 17.5% (n=43) Asian, and 6.9% (n=17) other/mixed. The sample had a mean age of 25 years (min 19, max 42, SD=3.27) with 64.2% (n=158) female, and the majority had household incomes of $100,000-$199,999 (29.7%), followed by $50,000-$99,999 (20.3%).

The study was unusual in having 16 study outcome variables, as follows: (1) 5 domain knowledge scores, 5 domain skills scores, and 5 attitudes scores (for 15)---while all were for rating the medical education curriculum; and, (2) cultural competency self-ratings.

Using backward stepwise regression and controlling for social desirability, across the 5 domains, and for knowledge, skills, and attitudes, the recurrent significant predictors of medical students providing high ratings of their medical education curriculum were: being male; having no prior career before medical school; having high confidence for taking action to be culturally sensitive, culturally competent, and culturally appropriate; yet, not actually having taken any action to be culturally sensitive, culturally competent, and culturally appropriate, specifically, not in the past six months and not as action taken across years (i.e. not in higher stages of action or maintenance); highly rating personal skills; and, highly rating personal attitudes. The amount of variance accounted for by the many regression models was approximately 30%, while some models accounted for approximately 40% of the variance.

Further, significant predictors of high personal ratings for cultural competence were: being female, having prior cultural competence training, being older, having higher personal global knowledge rating, and having higher social desirability scores. This model accounted for 15.1% of the variance.

Qualitative data permitted medical students to identify strengths and weaknesses of their medical education curriculum, along with recommendations for improvement. Together, the quantitative and qualitative data directed the discussion of implications and recommendations for improving United States' medical education.
