The Kennedy Index was used to examine NCAA Division I institutions gender equity performance. Four categories of NCAA Division I participants were used to evaluate how Division I categorization impacts participants' ability to deliver equitable athletic opportunities. The study included the impact that supporting football programs has on providing equitable athletic opportunities in comparison to those programs that do not support the sport. Profits from three sports: football, men's basketball, and women's basketball were used to measure the correlation between sport programs and Kennedy Index scores. Undergraduate enrollment size and athletic department size were also use as independent variables in the correlation test.

Results of the study found that there were statistical differences in Kennedy Index scores among the four categories of NCAA Division I participants. The Division I without football category had the highest Kennedy Index score among the categories. Supporting football programs was shown to be detrimental to gender equity according to the Kennedy Index. However, the participation component of the Kennedy Index revealed that institutions that compete in BCS conferences are closer to satisfying prong one of compliance test in comparison with institutions that compete in other conferences. Multiple regression analysis failed to find a strong correlation between Kennedy Index scores and the five predictor variables used in the analysis.
