Technology has been linked to psychic trauma from the beginning of the investigation into the condition in the 1860s. At first, investigators believed that trauma was caused by accidents involving the innovations that characterized the Industrial Revolution: railways and factories. Eventually, it became clear that trauma was precipitated not by organic damage to the body but by an overwhelming shock to the mind.

Technology has been linked to psychic trauma from the beginning of the investigation into the condition in the 1860s. Eventually, it became clear that trauma was precipitated not by organic damage to the body but by an overwhelming shock to the mind.

Nevertheless, when writing about trauma, psychologists and authors such as Jean-Martin Charcot, Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, Stephen Crane, Ernest Hemingway, and William Gibson continued to use representations of technology to clarify their understanding or representation of trauma. The consequence of such representation is that the discourse about trauma has been so saturated with figurations of technology that our current conception of trauma has irrevocably been determined by the idea of technology. When Freud, for example, repeatedly figures the psychic impact of trauma on the mind in terms of a train accident, he begins to determine how we conceive the impact of all traumas. While one could initially consider trauma apart from its technological figuration, "Discourse Accidents" demonstrates how and why such separation is no longer possible.

This overdetermined (and yet unconscious) deployment of figures of technology within the discourse of trauma has made possible our current understanding of trauma. What we know about trauma depends, in other words, on the stories we have been telling and the representations of technology that make these stories possible. None of this is to say that trauma cannot be caused by technology or that technology is necessarily traumatic. Rather, it acknowledges that many accounts that have been foundational to our contemporary understanding of trauma have themselves depended upon tropes of technology. These figures of technology, I will show through readings of fiction, psychoanalysis, technocultural history, and literary and media theory, have been critical to the writing of trauma's discourse. "Discourse Accidents" analyzes to what end figures of technology have been variously employed within the texts of trauma and what the result of this figuration has been.
