African American Entrepreneurs have been pioneers for innovation and entrepreneurship in the United States of America for years. According to the 2007 United States Census Bureau, African American owned businesses had a 60.5% increase recently. This qualitative study provides an overview of success factors for African American Entrepreneurs in North Carolina. Participants in the study responded to questions about factors that contributed to their entrepreneurial success. There were six themes that formed the theoretical framework for this study (goals, education and knowledge, mentoring, fear of failure, financial resources, and timing). The selected sample of 20 participants was drawn from an open source directory of African American Entrepreneurs. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data for this study. Data was then coded and analyzed to reveal nine themes that were critical factors that contributed to success (awareness of what attributed to success, having specific goals, acknowledging the importance of education, experience and knowledge, acknowledging the role of the mentor, using failure as a motivator, reasons for venture start up, personal financial resources, and having a strategic plan for the future). Overall, having a dedicated drive and focus, networking and having mentors were the most important success factors.
