Synthesis and single crystal growth are the first essential steps in the structural characterization of new materials. Large single crystals are usually preferred for complete property characterization. Bulk single crystal growth of Cu2O and KNaNbOF5 was targeted because 1) Cu2O exhibits strong third harmonic generations and hosts excitons with exceptionally long lifetimes and 2) KNaNbOF5 undergoes a complex phase transformation between its centrosymmetric and noncentrosymmetric polymorph and has potential as a piezoelectric material.

Large single crystals of cuprous oxide were required to conduct detailed optical experiments. Floating zone crystal growth of cuprous oxide coupled with photoluminescence and optical microscopy was used to determine the optimal crystal growth conditions. Copper vacancies, the dominant atomic defect in cuprous oxide, were removed through an initially counterintuitive strategy of partially oxidizing samples to promote CuO precipitation within the bulk Cu2O crystal following the reaction Cu( Cu2O/Cu) + V(Cu2O/Cu) + O(Cu2O/ Cu) → Cu(CuO/Cu) + O(CuO/O). This reaction was promoted through the use of high purity copper (99.999%) and growth followed by a post growth annealing step in air. This strategy for copper vacancy removal, however, inherently introduces CuO inclusions. The number of inclusions can be reduced with a slow counter-rotation rate of the feed and seed rods. As a last step, CuO inclusions were entirely removed in thin Cu2O crystal slices through a post growth annealing step. Third harmonic generation and the exciton photoionization cross section in these cuprous oxide crystals were measured.

A mechanoluminescence effect was observed when crystals of the noncentrosymmetric KNaNbOF5 polymorph were ground. Large single crystals of both forms were grown to study the origin of this luminescence (blue sparks) since it may be a result of a piezoelectric response. The cationic framework of the noncentrosymmetric polymorph exhibits a lower average Lewis acidity than that of the centrosymmetric polymorph. This lower average Lewis acidity was matched during hydrothermal synthesis with a potassium-rich solution when the K:Na ratio in the reaction was greater than 1:1, as the Lewis acidity of potassium is lower than that of sodium. This synthetic principle was used to grow crystals of both polymorphs for piezoelectric and luminescence experiments.
