Alignment between Information Technology (IT) and business has been a key concern of technology and business leaders for over five decades and is a crucial and basic foundation of strategic planning and competitive advantage. The management of IT-business alignment is especially pertinent to academia, particularly in terms of not only success but survival as well. The primary purpose of this research study was to validate the alignment maturity of higher education institutions in the United States compared to the overall industry average reported in "An Update on Business-IT Alignment: "A Line" Has Been Drawn," by J. Luftman and R. Kempaiah, 2007, MIS Quarterly Executive, 6(3), 165-177. The chief problem this research study addressed was IT-business alignment maturity in higher education institutions in hopefulness that the IT and business leaders may identify and focus their attentions on the key alignment issues. To assess IT-business alignment maturity, Dr. Luftman's original survey instrument was self-administered to technology and business leaders of accredited higher education institutions located in the United States. The survey measured the six constructs of communications, competency, governance, partnership, technology scope, and skills. The findings of this research study, supported by statistical evidence, suggest that the higher education industry does demonstrate a lower IT-business alignment average than the industry average reported as reported by Dr. Luftman and Dr. Kempaiah. However, the research findings of this research study also suggest that the higher education industry has shown a 50.88% increase in IT-business alignment maturity.
