Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2016.
The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of Scholar Intervention Program (SIP) on the academic performance of overage eighth-grade students. More specifically, this study investigated if SIP helped to improve reading and math performance of overage eighth-grade students. School officials in public schools have identified a disturbing statistic throughout the country: an inordinate number of 16-years-old seventh graders or 17-years-old eighth graders who are remaining in middle school. With this awareness and the demands to meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), caused by No Child Left Behind (NCLB), schools and some school districts have increased the pressure to develop an intervention program that would get the overage students back on track and advance them to the next grade level. The research methodology used in this study was quantitative in nature. Quasi-experimental (nonequivalent control group) was used to answer the research questions and test the hypotheses. This study compared reading and math performance of two hundred-five overage eighth-grade students in two middle schools in the same school district. Data was collected for two years using test scores from State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR). The expected findings should indicate the effect SIP has on academic performance of overage eighth-grade students. The SIP program was also expected to decrease the dropout rate, lower retention rates, and motivate overage eight-grade middle school students to move on to high school.
