Thesis (D.M.A.)--The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, 1998.
Kent Wheeler Kennan (b. 1913) influenced twentieth-century American music through his teaching, textbooks, and compositions. The document includes a brief biography of Kennan, a list of texts and musical compositions, and a discography to document his contributions to American music. The information presented was obtained through interviews of Kennan and several of his former students, associates and colleagues, materials in the Kennan Collection at the Harry Ransom Center at The University of Texas at Austin, his published texts and musical compositions, and Kennan's own personal collection. A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Kennan studied music at the University of Michigan (1930-1932), where he was a protegee of Hunter Johnson, and at the Eastman School of Music (B.M., 1934, M.M., 1936), where he studied composition with Howard Hanson and Bernard Rogers. Known best as a music educator and composer, Kennan won the Rome Prize for composition in 1936. Among his well-known works are Night Soliloquy, Sonata for Trumpet and Piano, and Three Preludes for Piano. Kennan wrote several compositions that have been performed by prominent orchestras, conductors, and soloists.

Kennan's most significant work includes his many years of teaching at The University of Texas at Austin, and two textbooks, The Technique of Orchestration, and Counterpoint Based on Eighteenth-Century Practice. The widespread use of his texts has been noted, especially among composers such as Ulysses Kay and Gail Kubik. Kennan's teaching skills also were displayed in the classroom and the document surveys his approach to teaching music composition. The careers of some of his most successful composition students, including composers John Barnes Chance and W. Francis McBeth, educators Robert Darnell and Stefan Kostka, and conductor Louis Lane were described. Known as being meticulous in his writing, composing, and teaching, Kennan consistently sought the input of others to insure the integrity of his works. His support, encouragement, and criticism of the works of other American composers and his influence upon them also is described. Kennan's influence on twentieth century American music is significant.
