Members of the helping professions naturally encounter stressors related to working with people in need. While burnout and job satisfaction among school psychologists have been investigated, the resilience of school psychologists has not been studied. The purpose of the study was to investigate school psychologists' resilience and its relationship to the five factors of personality, as well as the relationship between school psychologists' demographics, job conditions, and resilience. Resilience was defined as successful adaptation to stressors as measured by the 10-item version of the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (Connor & Davidson, 2003). A sample of 181 participants was recruited via the Illinois School Psychologists Association directory. The Big Five Inventory (BFI), a resilience measure, and a demographics questionnaire were completed by school psychologists practicing in school settings. It was found that personality accounted for the greatest amount of variance in predicting resilience levels as compared to demographic and job conditions variables. Three of the personality factors, Neuroticism, Extraversion, and Conscientiousness, significantly predicted resilience. No demographic factors significantly predicted resilience. However, job condition variables significantly predicted resilience; school psychologists' satisfaction with their job responsibilities was the most important predictor of the jobs conditions variables included in the study. Resilience was negatively correlated with participants' desire to leave their current job, as well as their desire to leave the field of school psychology within five years. Since a large proportion of school psychologists is nearing retirement, retention is critical to maintain adequate numbers of practitioners. The study underscores the importance of satisfaction with one's job responsibilities in staying resilient and contributes to the understanding of which personality characteristics may help professionals remain continually engaged in their work.
