This investigation analyzes representations of femininity in select prose by Marie Luise Kaschnitz, Ingeborg Bachmann and Christa Wolf. Employing a materialist feminist framework to make sense of the ways in which this fiction represents gender identity, this study seeks to show that notions of feminine subjective agency and resistance can be brought to bear on broader issues in Germanistik pertaining to identity, thinking difference, and historical determination.

This study commences with an analysis of the central author-image constructions in the reception histories of Kaschnitz, Bachmann and Wolf. I assess how dominant approaches to the literature of these authors have influenced their receptions in national and international contexts, and challenge conventional assumptions in these modes of reception, arguing for readings that emphasize authorial capacities for critical agency in the making of the German and Austrian literary histories.

Moving from an analysis of feminine author-images, the investigation shifts to an examination of disciplined and normed constructions of femininity in literature. A central finding indicates that hegemonic power relations produce forms of femininity little inflected by heterogenous signifying social practices and characterized instead by distinct tendencies toward homogeneity. In drawing on Foucauldian and psychoanalytic theories, the investigation suggests where feminist literary analysis can be enriched through the rewriting and rearticulation of key concepts and analytics in reading constructions of gender. The findings point to the utility of certain critical terms in evaluating the significance of deformed femininity, illuminating how materialist analytics productively situate bodies within determinate social contexts to expose how power shapes prevailing forms of feminine embodiment.

Through a contrastive analysis of several prose works, I explicate in each of these depictions the relationship of "femininity" and "masculinity" to subjective agency. Although I conclude that dimensions of these representations of feminine subjectivity point to severe limitations on agency, I maintain that attention to the narrative structures of these texts offers a means for renegotiating the parameters of feminine subjective agency and resistance.
