Thesis (Ed.D.)--Wilmington University (Delaware), 2016.
The object of this study was twofold: 1) to gain in-depth understanding of the lived experiences of elderly women grieving the death of their husbands and 2) to educate and to broaden the awareness of both professional and personal support systems. All interviews were conducted in a face-to-face mode with respondents who were over 70 years of age and widowed between 11 and 22 months. The qualitative study was an in- depth examination of loss affecting the behavioral, emotional, physical, spiritual, and financial aspects of life following the death of a husband. The goal of the study was to identify challenges and coping skills or lack thereof. Qualitative interviews revealed that age, gender, beliefs, and personality, in addition to anticipatory grief, played a significant role in the grieving process and adjustment. The report discusses issues of loss, grief, and reinvestment.
