Problem: Dementia is an emotionally and economically devastating disease, and statistics show the rate of diagnosis is increasing rapidly. Pharmacologic treatments are limited in their effect, and individuals are being admitted to nursing homes for long-term care regardless of their use. Therefore, non-pharmacological strategies, such as aerobic exercise, are needed to further improve care, cognition, and quality of life for individuals with dementia. Methods: The online resources of Weill Cornell Medical College were used to search for topics relevant to the review at hand. Abstracts were used to exclude articles that did not meet the criteria of aerobic physical exercise programs in older healthy adults without cognitive impairment. Results: Although some studies included in this review show that aerobic exercise can be beneficial for cognition. Others are inconclusive and do not show significant differences in cognition between groups that engage in aerobic exercise and those that do not. Conclusions: Results from RCTs regarding effects of exercise on cognition are inconclusive. Cognitive tests are helpful in determining level of cognition, however; a more holistic view of function is needed. The inability to perform ADLs/IADLs is responsible for the majority of costs related to dementia, and therefore, studies that focus on maintaining ADLs/IADLs will be extremely beneficial. In addition, the ability to maintain independence will help to improve quality of life for older adults. The research area proposed at the completion of this literature review aims to determine if aerobic exercise can delay the decline of ADLs/IADLs in older healthy adults.
