The rising importance of big data to corporate success has created significant management challenges which are of particular importance to established organizations. Senior leaders within established firms recognize the potential of big data; however, their efforts to launch big data projects often fail to deliver the desired results. The inability of big data initiatives to live up to the hyped-expectations has less to do with technology and more to do with management and culture. Using a mixed-methods approach including quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, this study generated recommendations for senior management within an established global pharmaceutical company. Recommendations focused on big data cultural attributes pertaining to cross-functional collaboration, leadership and decision making, external partnerships, work environments, and ethics.
