Thesis (Psy.D.)--Roosevelt University, 2016.
According to Objectification Theory, repeated experiences of sexual objectification can lead women to internalize this objectification and thus objectify themselves (i.e., self-objectification) (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997). Research has shown that self-objectification is related to a variety of negative mental health consequences for women (Moradi & Huang, 2008). It is theorized that feminism may protect women against the detrimental effects of sexual objectification. The present student examined whether feminist identity styles moderate the relation between experiences of interpersonal sexual objectification and self-objectification/body surveillance for 174 college women. Using hierarchical moderated analyses, results indicated that experiences of interpersonal sexual objectification were related to greater body surveillance. Rather than having a protective role, feminist identity was found to intensify this relationship. Implications for practice were discussed.
