Gulliver's Travels as a satire and Sacred Hunger as a historical fiction share parallel features. Both works unfold the underlying issues of racism, greed, hypocrisy and lust for power. Despite some of the differences, these works show remarkable similarities in structure and themes. They are primarily travel books, deeply entrenched in the eighteenth-century Europe; they spotlight the African slave trade, economic exploitation of the Otherized subjects along with a motive of colonial expansion and the creation of unequal, hierarchical worlds. They can be viewed in terms of utopias, having nostalgia for an ideal society and focusing on the Enlightenment. Both works divulge the Eurocentric views of the West plus their single-mindedness, highlighting cultural difference between Europe and other nations while attributing racial stereotypes to the less developed non-Europeans. Deconstructing the text of these books can pop up some of the glaring commonalities between them, and calls attention to the influences of Swift's Gulliver's Travels on Unsworth's Sacred Hunger. .
