Shel Silverstein is best known for his children's books. The Giving Tree, Where the Sidewalk Ends, and A Light in the Attic are three of the best selling children's books of all time. However, Silverstein was a modern Renaissance man. He won a Grammy, was an Oscar-nominated songwriter, and became a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He wrote "Boy Named Sue", made popular by Johnny Cash, and "One's on the Way" for Loretta Lynn. He also won a Joseph Jefferson Award for Best New Work in 1983 and wrote the screenplay for Things Change with David Mamet.

No scholarly literature currently exists on Silverstein's music or plays. In fact, many of his plays remain unpublished despite their critical acclaim. In a similar vein, very little is known about Silverstein's life. There is one full-length biography about him, which was unauthorized by his estate, four biography books for elementary readers, and a short book of scholarly criticism that centers on his poetry. Within all of these works, facts as simple as his birthdate are contradicted.

Silverstein's works in all of his fields blurred the lines between genres and challenged audiences and scholars to decipher what was meant for children and what was meant for mature audiences. The few scholars who have published work about Silverstein seem to believe his work shouldn't be classified as children's literature because of subversive messages it sends. These same scholars mention the fact that Silverstein was a Playboy writer and cartoonist before his work graced children's bookshelves around the world. In fact, some of his poems and stories that have been classified as children's literature also appeared in the controversial men's magazine like Silverstein's Lafcadio, The Lion Who Shot Back. Likewise one of his most popular songs, "The Unicorn" (famously performed by the folk group, the Irish Rovers), was first published as a song before it was published as a poem in Where the Sidewalk Ends..

Through the use of scholarly and popular literature, the first chapter is a comprehensive review of the literature written about Shel Silverstein. The second chapter explores the lines of what is considered "for children" versus "for adults," and if there is really a difference, by examining "Shel's Shorts", a collection of short plays. Lastly, a series of interviews explores Silverstein's contributions beyond children's literature and considers why the Chicago native and his works are so often left out of scholarly conversation.
