ADHD represents one of the most common psychological disorders diagnosed in America's youth. In America, nearly one in every ten children has been identified as ADHD, with almost twice as many boys as girls diagnosed. Recent trends in ADHD research have begun to reflect how children and adolescents play a role in their treatment, yet there little known about the youth's whole and integrated experiences of being diagnosed and treated for ADHD, especially across the lifespan. Using young adult's retrospective accounts from archived unstructured interviews, this qualitative ethnographic study aimed to explore, understand, and describe the experience of being diagnosed and medicated for ADHD as youth. Data analysis using Grounded Theory was used to uncover emergent patterns and themes of experience among the narratives. Results showed that a majority of the group struggled to take their medication consistently due to the negative impact it had on their personalities, mood, and relationships. They discussed their reactions and feelings to being diagnosed and labeled "ADHD" around the time they were developing and forming identities. These unfavorable experiences eventually led some participants to permanently stop taking their medication and to abandon their "ADHD" diagnosis in favor of identifying as "different, not disordered" in their adulthood. By doing so, they aimed to view themselves as healthy, normal individuals, with unique interests and strengths. In whole, this study emphasized that when intervention can have at its starting point, the search for and the recognition of strength, it promotes a way of thinking about individuals that doesn't begin with a process of "pathologizing" and restricting.
