Thesis (Ps.D.)--Widener University, 2016.
Herpes simplex virus (HSV), one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs), impacts individuals in any number of areas, including increased rates of mental illness, sexual difficulties, and strains on social and romantic or sexual relationships. Furthermore, HSV has a strong stigma attached to it, subjecting HSV-positive individuals to additional compounding mental, physical and social health consequences stemming from being a member of a stigmatized group. This relationship suggests a need for interventions that span psychological, relational, sexual, and social realms. Yet, a review of the literature reveals a lack of research surrounding the psychological impact of chronic STIs, and even less regarding interventions in a therapeutic context. As there is minimal research available, this dissertation expanded to look at a number of approaches that have been used with stigmatized populations, sexuality-related issues, or otherwise dealing with shame in treatment. By analyzing the use of mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and self-compassion focused therapy in related populations, it can be argued that these approaches might be integrated to form a meaningful intervention for individuals in therapy struggling with the impacts of HSV. ACT, incorporating mindfulness, and self-compassion focused therapy may be easily integrated to help facilitate an increase in psychological flexibility, self-acceptance, and compassion, as well as addressing difficulties with fused identity, shame/stigma, a lack of acceptance and compassion for the self and the diagnosis, and sexual or relational dysfunction in an individual with HSV. Through the use of these approaches, an individual with HSV may develop an ability to live a values-driven life that includes a healthy sexuality.
