Thesis (M.Ed.)--Nipissing University (Canada), 2016.
This qualitative study explored the subjective experience of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) with a focus on stress in relation to caring for sexually assaulted victims. The study adopted a phenomenological approach to investigate the lived experience of SANEs. Consequently, the paper found 6 themes relating to the experiences of SANE workers: (a) SANE--victim relationship, (b) descriptions of feeling burnout, (c) minimal knowledge of vicarious trauma, (d) awareness of vicarious trauma, (e) coping mechanisms used to decrease stress, and (f) episodes of vicarious trauma. Knowledge and communication are the main outcomes of this phenomenological study. Recommendations are based on both of these concepts.
