Madeleine Vionnet is widely regarded as one of the most innovative fashion designers of the twentieth century. She influenced generations of couturiers and designers, perhaps none so much as her employees, several of whom opened their own businesses after the Maison Vionnet closed at the start of World War II. This paper is an examination of the work of three such couture houses: Marcelle Chaumont, Mad Carpentier and Charles Montaigne.

The founders of these couture houses---Marcelle Chaumont, Mad Maltezos and Suzy Carpentier of Mad Carpentier, and Charles Montaigne (born Martinus Meuwese)---worked for Vionnet in high-level positions, most for many years. They comprised a "master class" of which Vionnet was the teacher. They were trained in techniques of design and construction that Vionnet developed and taught to employees. Her influence can be seen in their work for Vionnet as well as under their own names as they incorporated her methods into their own design processes.

While Marcelle Chaumont, Mad Carpentier and Charles Montaigne were critically acclaimed and successful in their time, the names of these couture houses and their principals are little known today. This is unfortunate, as their work in itself merits investigation, as does their training under the master couturier herself: Madeleine Vionnet. An analysis of the work of these couturiers illuminates Vionnet's role as mentor and teacher in influencing future generations.
