Thesis (Ph.D.)--Pacific Graduate School of Psychology, 1999.
This study was based on the premise that college counselors would favor a direct treatment style for foreign-born Chinese female college students. Sixty college counselors from across the United States and Canada were surveyed. The purpose was to investigate how gender and ethnicity would influence counselors choice of treatment styles. It was hypothesized that (1) Asian counselors would favor a direct treatment style, (2) male counselors would favor a direct treatment style, (3) Asian and Caucasian counselors would favor a direct treatment style for the foreign-born Chinese student, but not for the white student. Analysis revealed no significant relationships for the first two hypotheses. The final hypothesis was supported by respondents. Asian and Caucasian counselors favored a direct treatment style for the foreign-born Chinese student, but not for the white student.

Additionally there were some interesting findings. One implication of this study was that counselor ethnicity, and gender and student ethnicity appeared as a source of significant effects. Another implication was the importance of empathy in cross cultural counseling. The use of an empathic style during the first three sessions, and in the overall treatment of the foreign-born student was strongly endorsed by the entire sample. The generalization that Asians somatize their emotional problems was not supported by respondents for foreign-born Chinese females.
