The New Testament provides only brief accounts of Pontius Pilate's role in the execution of Jesus Christ, and its evidence as to his character is sparse. Aware of Jesus' innocence, Pilate nonetheless orders Him scourged and, fearing political complications, turns Him over to be crucified. Two contrasting traditions of Pilate emerge in early Christian thought. In some accounts, Pilate himself is executed by the Emperor for his unjust verdict, but, because his body is full of evil, the earth rejects his corpse, and wicked spirits tear it up and toss its pieces into the air. On the other hand, there are also stories of a "good Pilate" who ends his life in prayer and repentance for his great sin. Against this background of contrasts, this dissertation examines the portrayal of Pontius Pilate in medieval English Literature.

As the reluctant judge playing a paradoxical role in mankind's salvation, Pilate holds enormous promise for an author. Chapter One summarizes the early accounts of Pilate's life in scripture, apocryphal texts, and historical accounts. Chapter Two surveys Pilate's treatment in the sermons and homilies of the early Church Fathers, rich and varied commentaries ranging in approach from basic psychology and linguistic analysis to emotional apologetics and outright speculation. Chapter Three examines Pilate's rather functional role in Old English poems, sermons, and saints' lives, while Chapter Four explores Pilate's more animated presentation in such great Middle English works as The Stanzaic Life of Christ, Cursor Mundi, and The Northern Passion. Chapter Five analyzes Pilate's portrayal in the fourteenth- and fifteenth-century English cycle plays, contrasting the more villainous texts of Wakefield and York with the more philosophical dramas of Chester and N-Town.

As an ordinary man with common weaknesses, Pilate has the potential to be tragic, but whether or not he attains that potential depends upon the scope and concerns of each individual work. As each generation of English writers retells the passion story, Pilate grows in complexity, acquiring personality traits, emotions, and motives often independent of the New Testament.
