The purpose of the study is to achieve a better understanding of Wu Li--his life and his work, especially his association with Jesuit missionaries active in seventeenth-century China. A special attempt has been made to trace Wu Li's stylistic development in relation to his intellectual endeavor. In this light, Wu Li's poetry has been extensively translated and annotated to illuminate his paintings.

Within the dissertation, several major themes have been explored: Wu Li's early training as a Neo-Confucian scholar and a professional painter; the impact of the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci's treatise On Friendship on Chinese intellectuals of Wu Li's time; the question of Wu Li's conversion to Catholicism; the religious life of the artist-priest Wu Li as revealed by his poems and paintings; and Wu Li's individual landscape style and his pictorial sources. In this study, Wu Li's personality and art is investigated against the background of late Ming and early Qing social and political developments.
