Centering on the theme of cross-border love, this project examines complexities and difficulties of cultural and national hybridity and flexibility in contemporary identity formations. By comparing different cultures with colonial/ postcolonial and diasporic histories, this study brings together texts from eastern (Taiwanese, Tibetan, Chinese) and western (Caribbean, British, French) contexts to offer not only vertical but also horizontal inquisitions into the relationships among different margins. Dissertation chapters address four representative types of border crossing love significant to contemporary identity formations: diasporic love, ecofeminist love, intercultural love, and (trans)national love. All chosen texts propose reconfigurations of previous love narratives, archetypes, trends with respect to post-war developments on decentering reconstructions.

520 $a The first chapter, titled "Rewriting Love: Stories from the Margins," compares literary rewritings by first generation and second generation immigrants in Taiwan and the Caribbean. Selected love story rewritings illustrate crises of diasporic communities who encounter difficulties of identifying with love tales of cultural hegemonies.
520 $a Chapter two, "Saying `I Do' to the Beast: Hybrid Metamorphoses of Female Bodies in Progress," continues to expose problems of cultural centers by exploring literary depictions of women-animal relationships which unite women with animals to critique patriarchal acculturations of love story conventions.
520 $a The third and fourth chapters on Eastern filmmaking further develop contemporary love narrative's deconstruction and reconstruction of cultural and national hegemonies from aspects of East-West collaborations. Chapter three, titled "Intercultural Love: Eastern Adaptations of Shakespeare's Hamlet," extends the discussion frame into the second millennium with interdisciplinary examinations on two Eastern adaptations of Shakepespeare's Hamlet which emphasize love rather than revenge. By prioritizing emotional sentiments and Orientalist visualizations, the two films reflexively promote and critique self-fetishizing naturalization and feminization of Eastern cultural identities.
520 $a The final chapter, "Documenting Passions: Marking and Marketing Taiwanese Filmmaking," offers a case study on recent Taiwanese film productions in Taiwan and/or abroad that advertise (trans)national reconstructions of love to propose new routes for Taiwanese cinema and filmmaking in the age of transcultural globalization.
520 $a For contemporary subjects, love's challenges progress through love's loss, revival, and new reconstructions of love through border crossing narrative translations. The literary and cinematic works discussed in this dissertation claim hybridized love as a reflective description and deconstructive intervention. Like these texts detail, transformative change is never miraculous but rather time-and-effort consuming. Issues involving the problems and potentials of becoming and being hybrid persist as a prime challenge for contemporary worlds and its multifarious subjects.
