The intent of this study was to address notable gaps in current works regarding mental health treatment-seeking disparities among African American (AA) women. Attention to these gaps is important because mental illness presents significant risk factors to the well-being of African American women. Furthermore, the underutilization of mental health services among AA women is significant, as the absence of mental health treatment increases the likelihood of larger health and social issues. Guided by Kathy Charmaz' CGT approach, this study therefore explored mental health treatment-seeking disparities among African American women. More specifically, this study sought to understand help seeking for distress through the lens of a feminist interlocking perspective that recognized the multiplicative qualities unique to African American women, particularly while they are constructing their identity. In this study, fifteen African American women were purposefully selected to participate in open-ended interviews in an attempt to render descriptive responses regarding their help-seeking experiences. The descriptive data yielded by the interviews were sorted into theoretical categories, resulting in the theoretical framework of help seeking among African American women as a self-triaged construct guided by intersectionalism.
