Thesis (M.A.)--Tennessee Technological University, 2015.
Nathaniel Hawthorne created a substantial body of short stories and novels in the early days of American Literature, with The Scarlet Letter, his first popular and widely-distributed novel, considered his masterpiece. By exploring the path of Hawthorne's writing as he investigated the theme of the artist as hero through his career, beginning with three short stories and culminating with The Scarlet Letter, this thesis demonstrates how he settled on the female hero artist as the optimal form of the hero artist. It then establishes Hester Prynne as the apex of his exploration of this theme. Finally, this research uses Joseph Campbell's A Hero of A Thousand Faces to indicate Hester as a new mythological hero for the blossoming, newly independent United States. Her role as woman, hero, and artist equally contribute to her place in American culture as the mythic hero returning from the hero's quest to share the knowledge gained with her society.
