The use of projects as means of accomplishing change is not new. Research has shown that projects have been used for centuries to affect changes within society with examples ranging from the Great Pyramids to the U.S. transcontinental railroad. In its simplest form, project management is the harnessing of resources to accomplish change or a desired task. This qualitative research had three principle objectives. Using a case study approach, the research first sought to understand reasons why project managers working within innovation and new product development roles in industry decide to pursue a PMP certification. Secondly it sought to understand once the certification was achieved, did the research participants believe that the certification resulted in improved project management success. Project success was evaluated by the most recent success standards of cost, time, quality, scope, stakeholder expectations and strategic alignment. Lastly this research sought to contribute to the scientific field of knowledge by utilizing the resulting data developed in response to the first two objectives to help organizational leaders answer the question of whether they should expend scarce organizational resources in obtaining PMP certifications and did those certifications result in increased organizational project management success as evaluated by project management constraints of time, cost, quality, scope, stakeholder expectations and strategic alignment. The results of this research concluded that once the case study participant obtained their PMP certification, a majority of the case study participants felt that the certification did meet their expectations. There was a strong correlation between case study participant responses related to their perception that their PMP certification did result in improved project management skills that resulted in improved project success for their clients or customers. Overall this research study concluded that PMP certifications accomplished the primary objectives that were expected by the case study participants.
