A single-subject ABAB design was applied to three graduate students over four weeks. Anxiety, depression, mindfulness, and physical self-efficacy were assessed at the beginning and end of the study. Sleep, mood, and physical activity data were collected during A phases (weeks one and three), and during the mindful walking intervention B phases (weeks two and four).

Anxiety was assessed with the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), depression with the Beck Depression Inventory=II (BDI-II), mindfulness with the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), and physical self-efficacy with the Physical Self-Efficacy scale (PSE). Quantitative data related to sleep, mood, and physical activity was tracked electronically using the Jawbone UP band wrist worn activity tracking device on a daily basis throughout the entire 28-day study.

This study demonstrates that a mindful walking intervention may be a viable option for improving a variety of health constructs in graduate students. A mindful walking intervention is cost and time effective, accessible, is appropriate as an adjunct treatment as well as a preventative measure, requires a minimal fitness level to participate, and can be accomplished during the routine walking that most graduate students are accustomed to as a part of campus life. This study represents early research using a mindful walking intervention to successfully bring about change, and warrants further research.
