The present study examined the relationship between runners' need satisfaction, motivational regulation, and levels of mindfulness, flow, and psychological well-being. It tested a model proposed by self-determination theory research (SDT; Deci & Ryan, 1985). Specifically, it investigated whether the more the three needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness are satisfied, the more intrinsically motivated runners are and the greater their level of psychological well-being. Additionally, it tested the unique role mindfulness and flow play in motivation and well-being. The purpose is to better understand the experiences of a motivated group of people in the context of physical exercise, in this case running.

Inclusion criteria required participants to have run a minimum of 75 minutes per week for at least 6 months. Six-hundred and thirty runners completed the online study involving six questionnaires and a demographic survey. They ranged in age from 18 to 73 years old (mean = 41.9). The participants consisted of a highly educated, mostly white, upper-middle class sample from the United States, limiting the external validity of the study. The importance of basic psychological need fulfillment of runners, in the context of exercise, for greater intrinsic motivation and psychological well-being, as well as the importance of intrinsic motivation for greater well-being was supported by the current study findings. Although no moderation or mediation effects were found for mindfulness or flow, the current study did find significant correlations between both mindfulness and flow and basic need fulfillment, level of motivation, and well-being.

The findings of the current study highlight the importance of the basic psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness for positive outcomes and has implications for public policy makers as well as teachers, parents, and coaches. Specifically, in implementing programs to increase physical fitness, they should consider the role mindfulness and flow play in fostering greater intrinsic motivation and well-being. Suggestions for future research and limitations of the study are discussed as well.
