This study examined the relationships among rumination, trait mindfulness, and stress- related sleep disturbance. Correlational analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used to examine the relationship between rumination and stress-related sleep disturbance, and whether trait mindfulness mediates the relationship between rumination and stress-related sleep disturbance. College students between 18-53 years old (n=153), recruited by email, flyer, and Facebook, completed an online questionnaire with self-report measures to assess level of rumination [Rumination Scale (Trapness & Campbell, 1999)], mindfulness [Toronto Mindfulness Scale---Trait Version (Davis, Lau, & Cairns, 2009); Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory (Walach, Buchheld, Buttenmuller, Kleinknecht, & Schmidt, 2006)], and stress-related sleep disturbance [Ford Insomnia Response to Stress Test (Drake et al., 2004)]. Several mindfulness scales, measuring different aspects of mindfulness, were used. Rumination was positively correlated with stress-related sleep disturbance, such that higher levels of rumination indicate higher levels of stress-related sleep disturbance. Mindfulness was found to partially mediate the relationship between rumination and stress-related sleep disturbance. In addition, different measures of trait mindfulness produced different correlations with rumination and stress-related sleep disturbance, suggesting that different facets of mindfulness relate to rumination and stress-related sleep disturbance differently, and that interventions that focus on developing presence, non-judgment, and acceptance facets of mindfulness may help improve stress-related sleep disturbance.
