This qualitative grounded theory study determined the most effective coaching philosophy for today's youth team sports. Data were collected from fourteen participants using one-on-one, semi-structured interviews. Participants were successful high school coaches of team sports from western Pennsylvania. These successful coaches were chosen using purposive sampling, based on winning percentages and coaching accolades. Using a comparative analysis, this study investigated the coaching philosophies of winning current and retired high school head coaches. This comparison determined that successful coaching philosophies of both past and present coaches have many similarities. The study results indicated winning coaches are successful because of an unwavering focus on teaching life skills to the athletes. The results also found winning coaches act as lifelong learners, function as prepared professionals, care for the athletes, and delegate to assistant coaches. They use goal setting, high expectations, and motivation to create a tradition of winning. At the same time, recent changes in the culture of sports have both positively and negatively influenced youth sports and the coaching process. This study uncovered positive and negative changes in youth sports related to parents, technology, and sport specialization. The grounded theory model that resulted from this study outlines a successful coaching philosophy for today's youth team sports that focus on developing successful athletes both on and off the playing field.
