Obesity is a major public health problem and a leading preventable cause of death. Although the problem is being addressed from multiple angles, the number of adults experiencing weight gain has been increasing exponentially in recent years, especially in the Hispanic population. It is well documented in non-Hispanic populations that emotional eating, a response to psychological distress, can be an etiological factor of excess weight and obesity. The goal of this study was to examine these obesity- related factors, as well as the contribution of socioeconomic status to psychological distress scores in a sample of Latina women. Data was drawn from a larger study employing a quasi-experimental, survey-method design to assess the effectiveness of an obesity intervention program in a sample of 237 overweight or obese Latina women in Southern California. Results indicated that low socioeconomic status was related to higher levels of psychological distress. A highly significant association between psychological distress and emotional eating and a marginal association between emotional eating and BMI was found. Additionally, a difference in mean scores was observed from pre to post intervention in emotional eating. This study can aid the development of appropriate interventions.
