In the summer of 2012, I returned to Indonesia, my home country, to do a research on drag performers in three major cities: Jakarta, Jogjakarta, and Denpasar. In Indonesia, the lives of drag performers are inseparable from gay clubs and gay culture itself. I was fortunate to catch a glimpse of their lives, their transformations, their performance on and off the stage, and most importantly their thoughts and ideas of how the world viewed them. In Jogjakarta and Denpasar, I met and interviewed traditional cross-dress performers, and realized that Indonesia used to have a rich and ambiguous relationship with cross-dressing, gender-bending, and homosexuality. This relationship has almost been wiped out when Islam came.

520 $a As my understanding of cross-gender performers in Indonesia grows, so does my ambition. This project no longer stays a thesis project for graduation requirement, but it has morphed into a book with publishing potential. These people and their stories need to be heard.
520 $a I have spent two semesters workshopping some of the pieces from this drag performers project. The faculty and my classmates have been very helpful in shaping it. "The Women on Our Skin" started as a piece that's heavy with meta-journalism (writing about writing about journalism). But gradually, it becomes more of a memoir, a journey through the lives of some of the most amazing people I'd ever met, people who continued to challenge gender roles for whatever reasons, be it for money or to educate people, and perhaps doing both at the same time.
