The globalization of production has many facets, one of which is increasing trade in intermediate inputs. Chapter 1 analyzes the wage impact of imported intermediate inputs by exploring it from a gender perspective. I argue that the imported intermediate inputs affect the wages of workers via two channels: productivity and substitution/complementary. Then in a model, I show that the net impact depends on the task characteristics of occupations. The distribution of these tasks by gender is not homogeneous so one of the `explained' reasons of the gender wage gap is likely to be the exposure of these tasks to imported intermediate inputs. I find that male workers benefit from productivity effect more than female workers. But the task characteristics of their occupations are such that male workers are substituted by imported intermediate inputs more than female laborers.

Another facet of globalization of production is the reallocation of production to foreign countries. The employment implication of this phenomenon has been studied but usually for broad labor categories such as production and non-production. Chapter 2 looks at the impact of offshoring as well as technological upgrading by utilizing individual level data to be able to disaggregate labor market in more than two categories. Different labor types are identified based on educational (high school drop-outs, high school graduates, some college, college graduates) and occupational (by routineness: routine, semi-routine, non-routine; by offshorability: offshorable, non-offshorable) information of individuals. In both educational and occupational attainment, technology is usually a common trend apparent in all industries. Time controls cease the significance of it. Offshoring, on the other hand, affects high school and some college graduates negatively based on the educational categorization with or without time controls. Offshoring has a negative and significant impact also on the share of routine-offshorable occupations but not on the share of routine-non-offshorable ones.

The last facet of the globalization of production that is analyzed in this thesis is the intra-firm service trade. The tradability of services has been continuously increasing with the advances in technology and decreasing cost in communication. Many firms prefer to offshore their services to foreign countries. Chapter 3 benefits from Other Private Service data which had affiliated and unaffiliated trade transactions between the U.S. and 31 countries from 1992 to 2009. Analyses in this chapter highlight the determinants of service trade by affiliation. Gravity model estimations suggest that the depth of services sector affects export to the U.S.; total FDI and services trade are complementary; and technology is important for affiliated export. Language plays a key role for the import of services, especially for the affiliated import.
