Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Alberta (Canada), 2010.
The concept of literacy has developed from a single strand construct, from an ability to read and write to a powerful and complex web that encompasses other concepts and theories, as well as a wide range of skills and communication methods. This work explores the finer points of a process which facilitated this gradual expansion of the concept of literacy. The process explored herein considers actions / events / discourses that facilitated creation of a concept which reframes Aboriginal peoples' ways of knowing and being under a Eurocentric construct: the concept of "Aboriginal literacy." For some users this term may be a reference to principles of instruction; methods or approaches useful when working with Aboriginal peoples in educational or other environments. For others the term may be more encompassing.

The expansion of the concept of literacy, specifically in relation to the concept of 'Aboriginal literacy,' is detailed in this work as relegating the distinct knowledge systems of Aboriginal peoples to the level of words, theories and discourses. Aboriginal peoples' ways of knowing and being will no longer be positioned as distinct and valued knowledge systems, but will slip into an abyss of "'literacies"' and competencies. This discourse-based erasure of Aboriginal peoples' ways of knowing and being, foundational to personal and collective well being, will facilitate further erasure. Distinguishing aspects of Aboriginal peoples' cultures -- beliefs, values, and behaviours -- are at risk of being erased from practice, memory, and ultimately history. That such an outcome is possible is demonstrated in this work as a slow yet steady assault on the well being of Aboriginal peoples.

The processes associated with the expansion of the concept of literacy are being likened to those of an orb spider spinning a web. Also, through a discussion of real and potential outcomes, literacy is introduced herein as one of genocide's many instruments. This work provides a snapshot of the finer points of a process which threatens the well being of Aboriginal peoples.
