Sexual behavior among juveniles can range from normal and developmentally appropriate to abusive and violent. It is posited that psychosocial/psychosexual history is a predictor of antisocial and deviant sexual behavior; however, little research exists exploring the multifactorial relationships between clinical diagnoses and psychosocial history in juvenile sexual offenders (JSOs). Additionally, few studies exist exploring differences in clinical diagnoses including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), psychosocial history, and the severity of sexual offenses perpetrated by JSOs. The purpose of this study was to determine if there are significant differences between deviant and nondeviant JSOs in prevalence of ADHD diagnosis, prevalence of substance abuse diagnosis, history of physical abuse, history of sexual abuse, prevalence of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) or conduct disorder (CD) diagnosis, and early exposure to sex. Archival data, including clinical diagnoses and psychosexual history, were collected on 60 JSOs---30 deviant offenders and 30 nondeviant offenders---participating in a sex offender treatment program at an outpatient facility. A chi-square analysis revealed no statistically significant differences between deviant and nondeviant JSOs in prevalence of ADHD diagnoses, CD diagnoses, ODD diagnoses, a history of substance abuse, and early exposure to sex. Clinicians should not consider these factors as predictive of future deviant and nondeviant sexual behaviors. However, deviant offenders were more likely to have had a history of sexual abuse than nondeviant offenders. Clinicians should be aware that JSOs with histories of sexual abuse might be more likely to engage in deviant or violent sexual behaviors. More research is necessary to understand group characteristics of JSOs with and without histories of sexual abuse.
