Grassland soils are significant carbon (C) sinks; however, climate change may shift grasslands to C sources. To understand future soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics in semi-arid grasslands I analyzed three native-grass species and mixed-grass community biomass allocation and root-traits, and, SOC pool dynamics and priming following seven years of Prairie Heating and CO 2 Enrichment (PHACE) in Wyoming, USA. The results showed no significant climate change effects on species or community biomass allocation, but significant differences among species and community in root morphology and decomposability. Furthermore, labile SOC pool size increased and resistant SOC decomposition rate decreased with warming, while relative SOC dynamics did not change. Decomposition of P. smithii roots induced short-term, negative priming of SOC. Overall, unique species- and community-level root-morphological and -decomposition responses to climate change, and P. smithii root-induced negative SOC priming suggest future plant community composition shifts will affect ecosystem level processes in this semi-arid grassland.
