Previous research supports the use of aerobic exercise as an anxiety management strategy. In the current study, I used the enhanced critical incident technique (ECIT) to explore how aerobic exercise helped or hindered individuals' management of anxiety. Interviews were conducted with three participants that identified themselves as currently experiencing low to moderate anxiety, and using exercise as a tool to manage their anxiety levels. I collected data from the in-person interviews, which yielded a total of 75 critical incidents and wish list items. I placed the incidents into 7 categories, including (1) distraction or time-out from stressful reality, (2) social interaction, (3) sense of accomplishment from achieving goal, (4) confidence (self-esteem), (5) commitment to routine, (6) expectation of successful performance, and (7) effect on somatic anxiety symptoms. Results of the current study are consistent with previous research stating that aerobic exercise is a helpful tool for decreasing anxiety levels. I indicate areas for future research, such as helping or hindering factors associated with commitment to fitness routines in order to effectively mitigate anxiety symptoms. I suggest that implications for counsellors working with anxiety-affected clients include the potential use of aerobic exercise as an adjunct intervention to psychotherapy.
